# Car Details by Reg: Free Vehicle Details Check

> Free car details by reg: make, model, colour, year, engine size, tax and MOT status and MOT history. What the free check can't show, and how to see it.

Make, model, colour, year, engine size, tax and MOT status and the full MOT history for any UK vehicle, free from its registration.

A **car details check** shows what the official records say about a vehicle from its registration number. Enter the reg in the search box above: the free check shows the make, model, colour, year, engine size, tax and MOT status and the full MOT history straight away, with no sign-up.

## Car details by reg: what the free check shows

- **Make, model and colour**, so you can check the car in front of you is the one in the advert.
- **Year of manufacture and date of first registration.**
- **Engine size**, CO2 emissions and Euro emissions standard.
- **Tax status** and the date the tax runs out.
- **MOT status**, the expiry date and the [full MOT history](https://carcheckup.co.uk/mot-check) with advisories and failures.
- **Mileage readings** from every MOT test, so you can see if the mileage looks right.
- **Whether the vehicle is marked for export**, and the date its last V5C log book was issued.

## What model is my car?

The model and the make are on the V5C log book and in the free check. The free check names the model the DVLA and the MOT record hold. The exact trim level, the engine description and the power figures are in the full report's [car spec check](https://carcheckup.co.uk/car-spec-check).

## Car info the free check can't show

The official DVLA and MOT records don't say whether a car is still on finance, has been written off or stolen, or how many people have owned it. Those records are in the full car history check, together with the full specification:

- [Outstanding finance](https://carcheckup.co.uk/outstanding-finance-check) still owed on the car.
- [Insurance write-offs](https://carcheckup.co.uk/written-off-vehicle-check) (Cat S, N, C and D) and salvage records.
- [Police stolen markers](https://carcheckup.co.uk/stolen-car-check) and high risk records.
- [Previous keepers](https://carcheckup.co.uk/dvla-previous-owners), [plate changes](https://carcheckup.co.uk/dvla-number-plate-change-history) and colour changes.
- The chassis/VIN number and engine number, to check they match the car and the V5C.

See what it looks like in the [sample full report](https://carcheckup.co.uk/sample-car-history-report).

## How to check a car's details before you buy

1. Run the free check by registration and compare the make, model, colour and engine size with the car and the advert.
2. Read the MOT history: repeated failures, a sudden jump in advisories or a mileage reading that goes down are worth asking about.
3. Check the V5C log book: the registered keeper should be the seller, at the address they gave you.
4. Run the full car history check on the day you pay, so finance taken out recently still shows.

## Car details check FAQs

**Is the car details check free?** Yes. The make, model, colour, year, engine size, tax and MOT status and the MOT history are free. Finance, write-off, stolen and keeper records are in the full report.

**Can I find out who owns a car from its registration?** No. The registered keeper's name and address are personal data and are not published. The full report shows how many previous keepers the car has had and when it last changed hands.

**Where does the car information come from?** The free check uses the DVLA vehicle record and the DVSA MOT history. The full report adds data from Experian, which holds finance, write-off and stolen records.
