About CarCheckUp

CarCheckUp is a UK vehicle history check service operated by Milena Software Ltd, a UK-registered technology company.

A used car can have a history that neither the advert nor a look around the car will show: outstanding finance, an insurance write-off, a police stolen marker, a mileage reading that doesn't add up. CarCheckUp brings these records together in one report and explains what each one means, so you can decide with the facts in front of you.

Who operates CarCheckUp

What CarCheckUp checks

The free check shows the vehicle's DVLA record and its full MOT history, with our mileage anomaly check over every MOT reading. The full report adds:

• Outstanding finance recorded against the vehicle
• Insurance write-offs (Cat A, B, C, D, S and N)
• Police stolen markers and high risk register entries
• Previous keepers, number plate changes and colour changes
• Imported, exported and scrapped markers, and VIC inspections
• Mileage readings recorded outside the MOT, where available

What a report can show depends on what the data sources hold for that vehicle. How CarCheckUp works explains each step and our data sources explains where each record comes from.

How we read vehicle history

A record tells you that something was registered, not always why. A mileage reading lower than an earlier one is a potential anomaly: it is often a typing error at the test centre, sometimes a replaced instrument cluster, and only occasionally clocking. It does not prove mileage fraud on its own. A write-off record says an insurer settled a claim; it does not describe the car's condition today. Our reports keep what the records say apart from what they cannot tell you.

What a report cannot tell you

No vehicle history service holds everything that happened to a car. A report may not show:

• Mechanical faults that were never recorded
• Repairs or accidents that were never reported to an insurer
• Servicing and maintenance history
• Changes that have not yet reached the records
• How reliable the car will be in future

Use a report alongside an inspection, a test drive, checking the V5C logbook and service history, and an independent mechanical inspection where it makes sense. A CarCheckUp report is a research tool, not a replacement for looking at the car.

Our content and research

We publish guides on buying a used car, MOT records, mileage, write-offs and finance, and research from the anonymised, aggregated results of checks run on CarCheckUp. Research figures describe the vehicles people chose to check with us, not every vehicle on UK roads, and each one states its dataset, period and limitations. Our editorial policy explains how we write and correct content.
