What is an ex-taxi check?

An ex-taxi check tells you whether a used car shows the signs of having worked as a taxi, minicab or private hire vehicle (PHV), including cars driven for ride-hailing apps. Taxi and private hire cars can cover 30,000 to 50,000 miles a year in stop-start traffic, so it matters for the price you pay and for what you inspect. There is no public register of former taxis, but licensing leaves clear marks in a car's MOT history, and the CarCheckUp full car history report reads them for you by registration.

How to tell if a car was a taxi

  • An early first MOT. Most cars need their first MOT when they are 3 years old. Taxis must have one at 1 year old, and councils usually ask licensed private hire cars for an MOT too, so a first MOT long before the car's third birthday is one of the strongest signs.
  • MOTs every 6 months. Many councils ask licensed vehicles to pass an MOT or compliance test twice a year. MOT passes about six months apart, again and again, are a typical taxi pattern.
  • Very high mileage. A typical UK car covers about 7,000 miles a year; taxis and private hire cars often do three to five times that. Our free mileage check shows the miles recorded at every MOT.
  • MOT notes. Testers sometimes record taxi items in the MOT history, such as missing no-smoking signs.
  • Physical signs. Filled holes or marks on the roof from a taxi sign, extra wiring behind the dashboard for a meter or radio, brackets for a licence plate on the rear bumper or windscreen, and heavy wear on the driver's seat, steering wheel and pedals.

How our ex-taxi check works

Enter the registration or VIN for a free car check, then open the full car history report. Its ex-taxi check reads the DVSA MOT history and gives one of three results:

  • Likely used as a taxi or private hire: two or more signs together, or a strong one, such as six-monthly MOTs year after year or a purpose-built taxi model like the LEVC TX.
  • Possible taxi or private hire use: one sign worth asking the seller about.
  • No signs of taxi use in the MOT history.

Each result lists its evidence: the date of the first MOT against the car's age, the six-monthly MOTs and the miles per year. The check covers passenger cars, because vans, minibuses and lorries have their first test at 1 year anyway, and it uses the car's date of manufacture, so an imported car that needed an MOT as soon as it was registered in the UK is not flagged as an ex-taxi.

The ex-taxi check is part of the full car history report, together with the outstanding finance check, write-off check, stolen car check, previous keepers, plate changes and 150+ data points. See it in the sample report.

Which cars are most often ex-taxis?

In our analysis of more than 20,000 passenger cars checked on CarCheckUp (October 2026), the models most often showing taxi or private hire signs were the Toyota Prius, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the Toyota Corolla, the Kia Niro and the Hyundai Ioniq, followed by the Toyota Auris, Skoda Octavia and people carriers such as the Ford Galaxy, Volkswagen Sharan and SEAT Alhambra. Purpose-built LEVC TX black cabs and wheelchair-accessible taxis built on the Citroen Dispatch and Peugeot Expert also come up often. If you are buying one of these, run an ex-taxi check first.

Is it bad to buy an ex-taxi?

Not always. Many former taxis and private hire cars were serviced on time, because the driver's income depended on the car, and hybrids such as the Prius cope well with high mileage. But hard use takes its toll, so before you buy:

  • ask for the full service history and recent invoices;
  • check the clutch or gearbox, suspension, brakes and, on a hybrid, the battery health;
  • look for the physical signs above and test drive it in stop-start traffic;
  • pay a price that reflects the mileage, not just the age.

A car that shows taxi signs but is described as privately owned is a reason to ask the seller more questions.

Ex-taxi check FAQs

How can I check if a car was a taxi?

Run a free car check by registration to see the full MOT history, then the full report for the ex-taxi check. It compares the first MOT with the car's age, looks for six-monthly MOTs and works out the miles per year. Councils hold the taxi licensing records, so you can also ask the seller which council licensed the car.

Why do taxis have their first MOT at one year old?

Taxis carry paying passengers and cover high mileage, so the MOT rules require their first test at 1 year old instead of 3. Councils usually ask licensed private hire cars for an MOT as well, and many ask for one every 6 months as a licence condition.

Can I see if a car was used for Uber or other ride-hailing apps?

Cars driven for ride-hailing apps are licensed as private hire vehicles, so they leave the same signs in the MOT history: early or frequent MOTs and very high mileage. The ex-taxi check looks for those signs.

Is the ex-taxi check free?

The MOT history and mileage check are free with every car check. The ex-taxi check, which reads the MOT history for taxi signs and explains each one, is part of the full car history report.

1 in 3 vehicles checked by our customers had a recorded risk

Based on 4,403 full reports run between March 2023 and October 2026, 1 in 3 vehicles had outstanding finance, an insurance write-off, a stolen marker or a high-risk record. (Note: These figures describe vehicles our customers chose to check, not a sample of all UK vehicles.) Here’s what to look out for.

1 in 6 reports

Outstanding finance

The car may still be owned by a finance company. Buying it can lead to a dispute over who owns it, and the lender may try to recover the car or the money owed.

1 in 7 reports

Insurance write-off

An insurer has declared the car a total loss. Category S and N cars can be repaired and sold again, but the record lowers the value and can affect insurance.

1 in 3 reports

Number plate changes

Usually just a private plate, but a change can separate a car from its history. Check that the plate history matches the V5C log book.

Free in every check

Mileage anomalies

Our mileage anomaly check compares every recorded MOT mileage reading. A reading lower than an earlier one can mean an error, a replaced dashboard or a clocked car.

1 in 32 reports

Imported vehicles

Imported cars can have history from outside the UK that UK records don’t show. Ask for the import paperwork and service history.

1 in 30 reports

Colour changes

A respray can be harmless, or it can hide accident repairs or a disguised identity. Compare the colour on the V5C with the car in front of you.

Rare, but serious

Police stolen marker

Recorded on 17 of the 4,403 reports we looked at. A stolen car can be taken back by the police or the rightful owner, leaving you without the car or your money.

Rare, but serious

High risk register

A finance company, insurer or the police has registered an interest in the car. Contact them before you buy to find out if that interest is still active.

Car & Vehicle Check FAQs

Common questions about a free car check, a vehicle check by reg and a full car history check in the UK.

Is the car check free?

Yes. The free car check shows the DVLA record (make, colour, tax and MOT status) and the full MOT history with our mileage anomaly check, for any UK registration. Outstanding finance, write-off and stolen records come from licensed databases, so they are in the full car history check. A single full report costs £11.99 including VAT.

What is the difference between a reg check and a car history check?

A reg check (or number plate check) looks up a vehicle's details from its registration: make, model, colour, tax and MOT. A car history check goes further and searches the records a seller may not mention: outstanding finance, insurance write-offs, stolen markers, plate changes and mileage records.

What does a CarCheckUp full car history report include?

Outstanding finance, insurance write-off records, police stolen markers, high-risk markers, scrapped and certificate of destruction status, salvage auction records, mileage records and anomalies, full MOT history with advisories and failures, previous keepers, number plate and colour changes, V5C log book dates, import and export status, previous searches, and manufacturer specification, performance and emissions data.

Can I check a car by its VIN (chassis number)?

Yes. Choose "VIN / Chassis No." above the search box and enter the 17-character VIN shown on the V5C log book and at the base of the windscreen. We find the vehicle's current registration through the DVSA MOT database and run the check as normal. A vehicle that has never been in the MOT database may need a registration search instead.

Is the free car check really free?

Yes. The free check shows the MOT history with advisories and failures, mileage history with a mileage anomaly check, tax and MOT status and key DVLA vehicle details at no cost. You only pay if you want the full history report.

What is a mileage anomaly check?

It compares every recorded mileage reading for the vehicle in date order. If a reading is lower than an earlier one, we flag it as an anomaly: it can be a typing error at a test, a replaced dashboard or a clocked car. The free check runs it on MOT readings. If an anomaly is flagged, ask the seller for service records that show the mileage.

How much does a full car history check cost?

A single full report costs £11.99 including VAT, and multi-check bundles are cheaper per check. There are no subscriptions or hidden fees.

Where does the vehicle data come from?

From official UK sources: the DVLA, the DVSA MOT database, and Experian, which supplies finance, write-off and high-risk records and police stolen markers from the Police National Computer.

How quickly will I get my report?

Instantly. The full report opens on screen as soon as your payment is confirmed, and a copy is sent to your email.

Is CarCheckUp an alternative to an HPI check?

Yes. CarCheckUp covers the key checks buyers look for in an HPI check, including outstanding finance, write-off, stolen and mileage records, using official UK data with no subscription.

What should I do if a car has outstanding finance?

Do not buy it until the finance is settled. The finance company owns the car until the agreement is paid off and can repossess it, even from a new owner. Ask the seller to clear the agreement and get written confirmation from the lender before you pay.
