Read this first. These are vehicles people chose to check with a paid, full report, mostly cars they were thinking of buying. Someone who pays for a full report may already suspect a problem, so these rates are likely higher than for all used cars in the UK. They describe what our customers found, not the whole UK car market.
Key findings
- 16.7%had outstanding finance recorded: about 1 in 6
- 13.4%had an insurance write-off record: about 1 in 7
- 34.1%had at least one number plate change
- 5.3%had a mileage anomaly flagged
- Finance is a newer-car problem. 56.7% of cars under three years old checked with a full report still had outstanding finance recorded, against 0.4% of cars 16 years and older.
- Most write-offs can return to the road. Cat S and Cat N make up 88% of write-off records: cars an insurer wrote off that can legally be repaired and driven again.
- 77% of 5,710,686 MOT tests were passed. Of the popular models, the MINI Countryman did best (87%) and the Renault Trafic worst (70%). See all models
- Mileage anomalies rise with age, from 1.3% of cars aged 3 to 5 years to 13.3% of cars 16 years and older. Of the popular models, the Fiat Ducato has the most (13.5% of vehicles). See the ranking
- MOT advisories vary widely by model. The Ford Transit averages 2.2 per test; the Toyota Prius the fewest at 0.8. See the ranking
- The Toyota Prius is driven furthest, about 17,000 miles a year. See the ranking
- Write-off records by model: the Audi A3 had the highest share among popular models with enough full reports, 27.6% of the 76 checked. Small groups, so treat it as a pointer. See the table
- Most checked: Ford, Volkswagen and Vauxhall among makes; the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa among models. See the tables

Cat S (structural damage) and Cat N (non-structural damage) cars can be repaired and driven again; Cat A and B must never return to the road. The share of each popular model's vehicles with an insurance write-off record (any category), for models with at least 30 full reports. These are small groups: a few vehicles more or less move a model several places, so treat the ranking as a guide, not a verdict on the model.

Most common failure areas: lights and indicators (44% of failed tests), suspension (28% of failed tests), brakes (23% of failed tests), tyres (22% of failed tests), windscreen and wipers (16% of failed tests). Most common advisories: tyres (24%), brakes (20%), suspension (15%), corrosion (10%), oil and fluid leaks (9%).

Which cars have the most mileage anomalies?
The share of each model's vehicles with a mileage anomaly: at least one MOT mileage reading lower than a reading on an earlier day. A lower reading is a warning sign worth asking about, not proof of clocking: typing errors at the test centre and replaced instrument clusters also cause it. An advisory is a defect the tester noted that is not yet a failure: tyres close to the limit, a brake pipe starting to corrode, a minor oil leak. Method
- MOT dataset: the DVSA MOT histories of every vehicle checked on CarCheckUp that has one: 491,789 vehicles and 5,710,686 MOT test results, each vehicle counted once (its most recent check). The MOT sections use this dataset.
- Full report dataset: full reports bought on CarCheckUp between 14 March 2023 and 27 September 2026. Sample reports are excluded. A vehicle checked more than once counts once, using its most recent report: 4,390 vehicles. The finance, write-off, stolen, plate and age/make sections use this dataset.
- Classification: each vehicle is classified with the same rules as the report page, described in how CarCheckUp works. A check the source returned no result for is left out of that check's base.
- Write-off categories: from the category on each insurance loss record (MIAFTR, supplied through Experian). A vehicle can have more than one record.
- Age: the year of the report minus the DVLA year of manufacture. Make: the DVLA make.
- MOT figures: DVSA MOT histories of every distinct vehicle of each model checked on CarCheckUp (its most recent check), since our first checks. Pass rate is passed tests over all tests, retests included. Advisories per test is every advisory recorded divided by the number of tests. Failure areas group the DVSA defect text by keyword (tyres, brakes, lights and so on). Typical miles a year is the median, across vehicles, of the average between the first and latest MOT reading. "Mileage anomaly" is the share of vehicles with an MOT reading lower than the highest reading on an earlier day.
Limitations
- Not a random sample. These are vehicles our customers chose to check, and the rates are likely higher than for all UK used cars.
- A record at the time of the check. Finance may have been settled later; a write-off record stays even after a good repair.
- A mileage anomaly is not proof of clocking. Typing errors at the test centre and replaced instrument clusters also produce lower readings.
- Sources hold what was reported to them. Damage never claimed on insurance, for example, is not in any record.
- Keyword grouping is approximate. One defect can mention two areas (a corroded brake pipe counts under brakes and corrosion).
