Types of EV charger: slow, fast and rapid

An electric car charges no faster than its own limit, and charging slows as the battery fills, so a rapid stop from about 10% to 80% is usually quicker than charging to 100%.
Where to find fast chargers and EV stations
- Motorway services: most have rapid or ultra-rapid chargers for longer journeys.
- Charging hubs: sites with many rapid chargers in one place, often near main roads.
- Supermarkets and retail parks: fast and rapid chargers you can use while you shop.
- Car parks, hotels and workplaces: fast chargers for longer stays.
- On-street chargers: slow lamp-post and kerbside chargers for residents without a driveway.
EV charger connector types
- Type 2: the standard AC connector on almost every electric car sold in the UK, for home, slow and fast charging.
- CCS (Combined Charging System): the standard for rapid DC charging on most EVs sold in the UK, including Tesla's current UK models.
- CHAdeMO: an older rapid DC connector, used by cars such as early Nissan Leafs. Fewer new charging stations have it.
How to pay at an EV charging station
UK rules (the Public Charge Point Regulations 2023) require contactless payment on new public chargers of 8kW and above and on existing chargers of 50kW and above, prices shown in pence per kWh, and a free 24/7 helpline. Many charging networks also have apps and subscriptions with lower prices.
Buying a used electric car?
Check the charging side as well as the history before you pay:
- Try the car on a rapid charger and see the power it actually takes.
- Check the charging port, flap and cables for damage, and that the cables come with the car.
- Ask for a battery health (state of health) report, and compare the range shown with the car's official range.

How do I find fast chargers near me?
Tap Fast chargers near me or Rapid chargers near me above. Rapid and ultra-rapid chargers (50kW and above) are mostly at motorway services, charging hubs and larger supermarkets; fast chargers (7 to 22kW) are common in car parks, retail parks and workplaces.
Can I charge my electric car at any charging station?
Almost always. Nearly every EV sold in the UK uses Type 2 for AC charging and CCS for rapid DC charging, which most public chargers have. Some older cars use CHAdeMO for rapid charging, which fewer new chargers offer, so check the connector before you go.
How long does it take to charge an electric car at a public charger?
It depends on the charger and the car. A fast 7 to 22kW charger suits a stop of a few hours; a rapid charger can take many cars from about 10% to 80% in under an hour, if the car accepts that power.
