How we measure reliability

The MOT pass rate is the share of MOT tests passed by the vehicles of each make and model checked on CarCheckUp, from DVSA MOT records (figures from Oct. 2, 2026). It shows how often a car is roadworthy at its test, not how often it breaks down or what repairs cost. Newer cars pass more often, so a make with many recent cars scores higher: compare models of a similar age, and check the MOT history of the car you are looking at with a free car check.

Car reliability FAQs

What is the most reliable car brand in the UK?

In the MOT records of cars checked on CarCheckUp, Tesla has the highest MOT pass rate of the car makes (86% of tests passed), followed by Lexus and Porsche, against 77% for all vehicles. Newer cars pass more often, so a make with many recent cars scores higher; compare models of a similar age.

What is the most reliable used car?

Of the most checked models, the BMW 4 Series has the highest MOT pass rate (86% of tests passed, from 2,245 vehicles). Any single car depends on how it was looked after: check its own MOT history and run a history check before you buy.

How do you measure car reliability?

By MOT pass rate: the share of MOT tests passed by the vehicles of each make and model checked on CarCheckUp, from DVSA MOT records, along with the most common reasons for failure and the typical annual mileage. It measures roadworthiness at the test, not breakdowns or repair costs.
