Car paint code finder: three ways to find your paint code

  • UK registration: enter the reg above. We fill in the car's make, model, year and colour from its DVLA record.
  • VIN (chassis number), from any country: tap VIN above. We fill in what the VIN tells us.
  • Make, model and year: choose your car if it isn't registered in the UK.

Then pick your car's exact shade from the colours we hold for it, such as Toyota C-HR in Nebula Blue or Pacific Blue Mica. You get its factory paint code on screen and by email, with where the label is on your car, for £3.99. The paint code is sold on its own, not as part of the full car history report.

Paint codes for cars from every country

Paint codes are set by the car maker, not the country, so the same code covers a model wherever it was sold: the UK, Europe, the USA, Australia, the Middle East or anywhere else. We support cars from all over the world, with the factory colours of over 55 makes and more than 1,100 models, from European, Japanese, Korean and American makers. Opel cars use the same paint codes as Vauxhall. Can't find your car's shade? Contact us and we'll help.

Paint code, colour code, color code: one thing, many names

The paint code is the manufacturer's code for your car's exact shade, such as 300 for BMW Alpine White or 7VTA for Ford Frozen White. You'll also see it called the colour code, car color code (US spelling), paint colour code, paint code number or touch up paint code. Touch-up paint, scratch pens and a respray only match if you order this code: the colour on the log book, such as "grey", isn't enough, as one make can have ten greys.

What colour is my car?

The V5C log book and the DVLA record show only the basic colour, such as blue or silver: the free check shows it for any UK car. The paint code tells you the exact shade. A shade the maker calls "graphite" or "magnetic" is usually recorded as grey, so check the code on the car's label before you order paint.

Where is the paint code on my car?

The paint code is on a label or plate, usually in the driver's door frame, under the bonnet or in the boot by the spare wheel. Common places by make:

  • Ford: the sticker on the driver's door pillar (B-pillar).
  • Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and Skoda: the vehicle data sticker in the boot, by the spare wheel well, and in the service book.
  • Vauxhall: the identification sticker or plate on a door pillar or under the bonnet.
  • BMW and MINI: the sticker on the door pillar or under the bonnet.
  • Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Kia and Hyundai: the plate in the driver's door frame.
  • Mercedes-Benz, Peugeot, Citroën and Renault: the door frame or under the bonnet.

For every make, with what the code looks like and where else to look, see our guide: where to find your car's paint code. If you still can't find it, enter the VIN above, or ask a franchised dealer to look up the original paint from the VIN.
