What does Cat S mean?

Cat S (Category S) means a car has been written off by an insurer after structural damage: damage to the chassis, the frame, the crumple zones or other parts that hold the car together and protect you in a crash. Typical causes are a heavy collision or hitting a kerb or pothole hard enough to bend suspension mountings.

A Cat S car can be repaired and driven on the road again, but the repair has to restore the structure, so it should be done by a professional body shop.

Cat S and Cat N: the difference

  • Cat S: structural damage, professionally repaired.
  • Cat N: non-structural damage, such as panels, lights, trim or electrics.

Cat S replaced the old Cat C in October 2017, but the two do not match exactly: Cat C was about repair cost, Cat S is about the type of damage. Cat A and Cat B cars must never return to the road. See all write-off categories explained.

Is it safe to buy a Cat S car?

A properly repaired Cat S car can be safe and good value, but this is the category where a poor repair matters most, because the structure decides how the car protects you in a crash. Before you buy:

  • Ask what the damage was, and for photos of it and invoices from the body shop that repaired it.
  • Pay for an independent inspection: ask the inspector to check the chassis legs, welding, panel gaps, paint depth, wheel alignment and the airbags.
  • Test drive it on a straight road: the car should not pull to one side, and the steering wheel should sit straight.
  • Walk away from a seller who cannot or will not show what was repaired.

Cat S cars: price and insurance

Price: a Cat S car sells for noticeably less than the same car with a clean history, usually more of a discount than a Cat N car, and it will be worth less when you sell it too.

Insurance: many insurers cover Cat S cars, often at a higher price, and some decline them. You must tell your insurer the car is a Cat S write-off, or a claim could be refused. Get a quote before you buy.

How to find out if a car is Cat S

Write-off records are held on the insurance industry's register and are not shown on the free DVLA record or the MOT history. A written-off car check shows the category and date. The full report also shows salvage auction records, which can reveal damage even when no write-off is recorded, plus outstanding finance and stolen records.

Cat S FAQs

What does Cat S mean on a car?
It was written off by an insurer after structural damage, and has been, or can be, professionally repaired and driven again.

Is Cat S worse than Cat N?
Generally yes: Cat S means the structure was damaged, Cat N means it was not. A well-repaired Cat S car can still be a better buy than a badly repaired Cat N one.

Can you drive a Cat S car?
Yes, once it has been repaired and is roadworthy, with a valid MOT, tax and insurance.

Does a Cat S car need to be re-registered?
No. It keeps its registration.

Can a Cat S car pass an MOT?
Yes, if the repair makes it roadworthy. An MOT checks the car's condition on the day, not whether it was written off, so it is no proof of a good structural repair.

Does a Cat S record ever come off?
No. The write-off stays on the car's record for life.
