A car history check shows what the records held on the day it was run. Records change all the time, so when you run your check matters almost as much as running one at all.
Why records change
- Finance can be taken out against a car at any time, including just before it's sold.
- Theft is recorded when it's reported, which can be days after the car was taken.
- Write-offs are added when an insurer settles a claim, which can take weeks after an accident.
- MOTs and mileage are added after every test.
A check from last month can miss something that's on the record today.
The best times to check
- Before you travel to see the car: a free check shows the MOT history, recorded mileage, tax status and vehicle details, and whether they match the advert. It can save you a wasted journey.
- When you've decided to buy: run the full history check for finance, write-off, theft, keepers and plate changes.
- On the day you pay, if some time has passed since your check, especially for finance and theft.
Why the seller's check isn't enough
Sellers sometimes show a clean history check to reassure buyers. Treat it as a starting point, not proof:
- it may be weeks or months old;
- it may be for a different car, or a screenshot that has been edited;
- you can't be sure what it covered.
Run your own check on the registration, and compare the VIN on the car with the report and the V5C. See where to find the VIN.
Save money if you're viewing several cars
If you're comparing a few cars, a multi-check bundle costs less per report, and unused checks don't expire. See our prices.
Key points
- A check shows the records on the day it's run; records change all the time.
- Check before viewing, before deciding, and again on the day you pay if time has passed.
- Run your own check rather than relying on the seller's. Read what a car history check covers.
You can start with a free car check the moment you find an advert: enter the registration on our car check page to view the car's history from DVLA and MOT records, then run the full car history check for finance, write-off and stolen records just before you pay.
