A used van can save thousands over a new one, but vans live harder lives than most cars. This checklist covers what to check on paper and in person before you buy.
1. Run a van check by registration
Start with our free van history check: it shows the DVLA details, tax and MOT status, and every MOT test with its mileage and advisories. Then get the full report before you pay, for outstanding finance, insurance write-offs and stolen records. Business finance and lease agreements are common on vans, and an agreement still recorded against the van is a problem for the buyer.
2. Check the mileage and how the van was used
High mileage is normal for a van; unexplained mileage is not. Compare the odometer with the MOT readings using our mileage check. Ex-fleet vans often have many keepers and a full service record from a fleet contract; ask for it.
3. Check the weight it is plated for
A van's gross weight decides what it can legally carry and which MOT it needs: class 4 up to 3,000 kg, class 7 from 3,000 to 3,500 kg. Our vehicle weight check shows the revenue weight recorded for the registration. Make sure the payload suits the work you need it for.
4. Check emissions if you drive into a clean air zone
Older diesel vans often don't meet ULEZ or clean air zone standards (Euro 6 for diesel). Check the Euro status with our ULEZ check before you buy, not after the first charge.
5. Inspect the van in person
- Load area: floor, bulkhead and wheel arches for damage, rust and signs of overloading.
- Clutch, gearbox and suspension, which wear fastest under load.
- Diesel particulate filter warnings on vans used for short trips.
- Roof racks, tow bars and tail lifts: check the fixings and whether they were fitted properly.
6. Check the price and the paperwork
Dealers often quote van prices before VAT, so check whether the price includes it. Compare the VIN on the V5C logbook with the van, and never pay before the checks are done. See how to pay safely for a used vehicle.
